A PAIR BRONZE OF PORTRAIT BUSTS, EDWARD ONSLOW FORD (BRITISH 1852-1901)
LATE 19TH CENTURY Signed and dated 1897
A finely cast pair of complementary bronze portrait busts depicting an elderly gentleman and lady, executed with remarkable naturalism and detail. The gentleman is portrayed with a long beard and dignified expression, dressed in a buttoned waistcoat and jacket; the lady wears a high-necked Victorian gown with puffed sleeves and lace detailing, her hair adorned with a floral headdress.
Both busts display a beautifully aged verdigris patina, accentuating the depth and texture of the modeling. The sculptor’s attention to anatomical realism and period costume is typical of the late 19th Century European realist tradition. Likely commissioned as private commemorative portraits, these works reflect the refinement and sentiment typical of the era’s portrait sculpture.
